God of the sea, the earthquake, and the horse. When the three sons of Kronos drew lots for the cosmos he received the sea; his trident makes the headlands tremble. He lost the contest for Athens to Athena — she offered the olive, he the salt-spring — and turned his grudge on her city throughout the *Odyssey*.
