Pegasus
Pēgasos
Minor DeityWinged Horse, Bearer of Zeus's Thunderbolt
Winged horse, son of Poseidon and Medusa, born from the stump of Medusa's severed neck when Perseus beheaded her. Tamed by Bellerophon at the Peirene spring of Corinth with Athena's golden bridle, he carried the hero through the Chimera-slaying, the Solymi campaign, and the Amazon raid. When Bellerophon tried to ride him up to Olympus, Zeus sent a gadfly to sting him; Pegasus threw his rider and flew on to Olympus alone, where he became the bearer of Zeus's thunderbolt. The Hellenistic catasterists made him the constellation Pegasus.
Origin
