Agēnōr

HeroKingship, Phoenicia

King of Tyre (in other traditions of Sidon) in Phoenicia, son of Poseidon and the Danaid Libya and twin brother of Belus king of Egypt (Apollodorus *Bibliotheca* 2.1.4 + 3.1.1; Diodorus 4.60.1–2; Hyginus *Fabulae* 178). His daughter Europa was carried off by Zeus in the shape of a white bull; he sent his sons Cadmus, Phoenix, Cilix, Thasos, and Phineus out into the world to find her with orders not to return without her, and each son, failing, settled where his search had brought him — Cadmus at Thebes after consulting Delphi, Phoenix back in Phoenicia (which he renamed), Cilix in Cilicia, Thasos on the island of Thasos (Apollod. 3.1.1; Hdt. 1.2; with Cadmus's Theban foundation in particular at Apollod. 3.4.1 + Paus. 9.12.1–4). Agenor himself died at Tyre never having seen his daughter again.
