Daughter of Coeus and Phoebe, mother by Zeus of the twin Olympians Apollo and Artemis. Hera's jealousy drove her pregnant across the earth, where every land refused her for fear of Hera's anger — until the floating, rootless island of Delos accepted her, secured by four columns drawn up from the seafloor. The *Homeric Hymn to Apollo* names the place where she gave birth, leaning against a palm tree on Mount Cynthus.
