Artemis

Twin of Apollo, virgin huntress, protector of the wild, and guardian of girls before marriage. In Callimachus's *Hymn to Artemis* she asks Zeus, still a child, for eternal virginity, the bow, the company of sixty Oceanid nymphs, and the mountains for her hunting-ground. Swift to anger — Actaeon she turned to a stag, Niobe's daughters she shot down — and yet *kourotrophos* in cult, nurse of the young.
