Helios

TitanThe Sun

The all-seeing Sun, who rises each dawn from the eastern stream of Ocean and drives his four-horse chariot through the sky to set in the west. As the unblinking witness of all that happens he reports to Demeter the abduction of Persephone in the *Homeric Hymn to Demeter*; in the *Odyssey* it is his sacred cattle on the island of Thrinacia that Odysseus's crew slaughter, the act that destroys the ship. By the Oceanid Clymene he fathered Phaethon, who took the chariot for a day and burned the earth.
