Tethys

Titaness of fresh water at its source — the springs, fountains, and underground aquifers that feed the rivers of the world. With her brother Oceanus she bore the 3,000 male river-gods and the 3,000 Oceanid-nymphs of Hesiod's vast hydrographic catalogue. In the *Iliad* she is the nurse of Hera, sheltering the young goddess during the Titanomachy in the *Iliad*'s deceit-of-Zeus episode.
