TitanEndurance, Astronomy

Eldest of the Iapetids and the figure of compelled endurance: after the Titanomachy Zeus condemned him to stand at the western edge of the world and hold up the heavens on his shoulders. Homer calls him the Titan who knows the depths of every sea and keeps the tall pillars apart between earth and sky. By Pleione he fathered the seven Pleiades, including Maia, mother of Hermes; Apollodorus and Homer also assign him the nymph Calypso, whose island detains Odysseus for seven years.
