God of war in its raw, intoxicating violence — the slaughter Athena's strategy stays clean of. Son of Zeus and Hera, he is among the most poorly thought of gods in Homer: Zeus calls him the most hateful of all the Olympians. Diomedes wounds him on the field; he flees to Olympus bellowing. Demodocus's song catches him in golden nets, in bed with Aphrodite.
