Pontus

The sea itself in archaic shape, born from Gaia without union. By his mother Gaia he later fathered the elder sea-gods: Nereus the truthful old man, Thaumas the wonder, Phorcys, the sea-monster Ceto, and Eurybia of stone — a generation older than the Olympian Poseidon and the source of the Pontic dynasties that fill the *Theogony*'s sea-catalogue.
