Persephone

Maiden of the spring and dread queen of the underworld — Korê on the meadow, Persephone enthroned beside Hades. Picking flowers on the Nysian plain she was seized by her uncle and carried below; the pomegranate seed she ate bound her to return each year. Hesiod gives her parentage from Zeus and Demeter; her annual return mirrors the rhythm of the grain.
