Jason
Iason
HeroLeadership, Seafaring
Captain of the Argo and protagonist of the first heroic sea-voyage of Greek myth. Reared on Mount Pelion by the centaur Chiron after his uncle Pelias usurped the kingdom of Iolcus, he returned wearing a single sandal — the omen Pelias feared — and was sent for the Golden Fleece of Colchis as an impossible task. Aided by Athena, by the seer Mopsus, and decisively by the sorceress Medea, daughter of King Aeetes, he yoked the bronze-footed oxen, sowed the dragon's teeth, took the Fleece, and returned via the Danube and the western seas. The marriage soured at Corinth when he set Medea aside for the king's daughter, with the catastrophic ending Euripides dramatises.
