Epimetheus

Brother of Prometheus and his foil — his name means *Afterthought*, the one who learns by what has already happened. Forewarned by his brother to accept no gift from Zeus, he nevertheless took Pandora as his bride when she arrived from the gods; she opened her jar and released every ill onto humankind, leaving only Hope shut inside. By Pandora he became the ancestor (through their daughter Pyrrha) of the mortal lineage that survives Deucalion's flood.
