Chaos
Khaos
PrimordialThe Void
The first to come to be — a yawning chasm before earth, sky, or sea. After Chaos in Hesiod's order came Gaia, Tartarus, and Eros as independent primordials; from Chaos herself sprang the darker pair Erebus and Nyx. Later cosmologies treat Chaos as the formless matrix from which the structured cosmos was articulated, not a deity to be worshipped.
