Tīsiphonē

Minor DeityFury of Vengeance; avenger of murder

One of the three Erinyes (Furies), her name meaning 'avenger of murder' (tisis, 'retribution,' + phonos, 'slaughter'). Like her sisters she springs from the blood of castrated Uranus that fell upon Gaia (Hes. *Theog.* 183–187), the Erinyes being unnamed in Hesiod; the triad Alecto, Tisiphone, Megaera is fixed by Apollodorus (Apollod. *Bibl.* 1.1.4). The Furies punish above all the spilling of kindred blood — the crime for which they pursue the matricide Orestes in Aeschylus's *Eumenides* — together with perjury and offences against parents, guests, and suppliants.

Origin

Born from the blood of the castrated Uranus falling upon Gaia (Hes. Theog. 183-187); named as one of the three Erinyes by Apollodorus (Bibl. 1.1.4).
