HeroSeamanship

First helmsman of the Argo, a Boeotian sea-captain taught by Athena herself to read the stars and the swell. He steered the ship through the clashing Symplegades at the mouth of the Pontus, the most feared passage in the Argonautic route; soon afterward, at the land of the Mariandyni, he sickened suddenly and died, and the Argonauts buried him beside Idmon on the Bithynian shore (Apollonius *Argonautica* 2.851-898).

Origin

Son of Hagnias of Siphae in Boeotia (Apollonius *Argonautica* 1.105-108).
