Orpheus
Orpheus
HeroMusic, Mysteries
Thracian bard whose lyre could move stones, beasts, and the gods of the dead. He sailed with the Argonauts and saved the ship at the Sirens' island by playing a melody louder and sweeter than their song. Later he descended into the Underworld to bring back his bride Eurydice, and was granted her on condition that he not look back — but he did, on the threshold, and lost her forever. The Maenads of Thrace finally tore him to pieces, and his head, still singing, floated down the river to the sea.
