Megaera

One of the three Erinyes (Furies), her name derived from megairō, 'to grudge' — the resentful, jealous wrath that pursues the wrongdoer. With Alecto and Tisiphone she is born of the blood of castrated Uranus on Gaia (Hes. *Theog.* 183–187), the Erinyes unnamed in the *Theogony*; the named triad is Apollodorus's (Apollod. *Bibl.* 1.1.4). The Furies dwell in the underworld and rise to punish blood-guilt, oath-breaking, and offences against the bonds of family and hospitality, relenting only when justice is satisfied.
