Iobates

Iobates

Iobatēs

HeroKing of Lycia

King of Lycia, father-in-law of Proetus of Tiryns (Hom. *Il.* 6.170–174; Apollod. 2.3.1–2). Received Bellerophon carrying Proetus's sealed letter instructing him to kill the bearer; unwilling to break xenia by killing a guest directly, he instead sent him against the Chimera in the burning mountains inland from the Lycian coast (modern Yanartaş, Strabo 14.3.5). When Bellerophon survived the Chimera, the Solymi, and the Amazons, Iobates recognised his divine protection, showed him the letter, gave him his daughter (Philonoe, distinct from Stheneboea) in marriage, and made him heir to Lycia.

Origin

King of Lycia, father of Stheneboea/Anteia and of Philonoe (Hom. *Il.* 6.197 names Laodameia as another daughter, mother of Sarpedon by Zeus).
