Hypnos
Hypnos
Minor DeityGod of Sleep
The god of sleep, son of Night (Nyx) born without a father, and twin brother of Death (Thanatos) — Hesiod bears them together in the catalogue of Night's children (Hes. *Theog.* 211–213). The two dwell side by side in the underworld, but where Death has a heart of iron and pity for none, Sleep roams gently over the earth and sea, kind to mortals (Hes. *Theog.* 758–766). In the *Iliad* Hera enlists Hypnos to lull Zeus asleep so the Trojans may be beaten back, bribing him with one of the Graces, Pasithea, for a bride (Hom. *Il.* 14.231–291).
Origin
Son of Nyx (Night) without a father (Hes. Theog. 211-213); twin of Thanatos.
