God of the East (or south-east) Wind, the fourth of the cardinal winds. Unlike his brothers Boreas, Zephyrus, and Notus, Eurus is not given a parentage in Hesiod's *Theogony*, which names only the three winds born of Astraeus and Eos; he enters the canon through Homer, who lists all four winds blowing together — Eurus, Notus, Boreas, and Zephyrus — to whip up the sea against Odysseus's raft (Hom. *Od.* 5.295–296). Later writers grouped him with the other three as a son of Astraeus and Eos to complete the directional set.
Origin
The East Wind; the fourth cardinal wind, named by Homer (Od. 5.295) but absent from Hesiod's parentage of the three winds. Later grouped with the brothers as a son of Astraeus and Eos.
