Dike

Dikē

Minor DeityHora of Justice; the personified Right

One of the three Horai, the personification of justice and right judgement, daughter of Zeus and Themis (Hes. *Theog.* 901–906). In the *Works and Days* she sits beside her father Zeus and reports to him the unjust dealings of men, so that the people pay for the crimes of their crooked-judging kings (Hes. *WD* 256–262). She is the moral counterpart of her mother Themis (divine law): Dike is justice as it bears on human conduct, the maiden offended by bribery and false verdicts. Later astronomers identified her with the constellation Virgo, the Just Maiden who fled the earth in the age of iron.

Origin

Daughter of Zeus and the Titaness Themis (Hes. Theog. 901-906); one of the three Horai.
