Athenian Argonaut, a beekeeper by profession in the generation before the Trojan War. Alone among the crew of the Argo he could not bear the song of the Sirens — Orpheus's counter-song was not enough for him — and he leapt overboard to swim toward their meadow. Aphrodite, watching, plucked him from the water at the last moment and set him down on the western shore of Sicily at Lilybaeum (Apollonius *Argonautica* 4.912-919).
