Boreas

Boreas

Minor DeityGod of the North Wind

God of the cold North Wind, who blows from his seat in wintry Thrace. With his brothers Zephyrus and Notus he is a son of the Titan Astraeus and Eos, the Dawn (Hes. *Theog.* 378–380). The Athenians counted him a kinsman by marriage: he carried off the princess Oreithyia, daughter of Erechtheus, as she danced by the Ilissus, and fathered the winged Boread brothers Zetes and Calais, who later sailed with the Argonauts (Apollod. *Bibl.* 3.15.1–2). For this tie Athens credited Boreas with wrecking the Persian fleet off Cape Sepias before Artemisium.
