HistoricalSatrap of Bactria, Regicide of Darius III, Pretender to the Achaemenid Throne

Achaemenid satrap of Bactria under Darius III; after Gaugamela, fled east with the king, conspired with the Persian grandees Nabarzanes and Barsaentes, and in the summer of 330 BC stabbed Darius in his wagon on the road east of Hecatompylos (Arr. *Anab.* 3.21–22). Proclaimed himself 'Artaxerxes V' — the last Achaemenid pretender — and raised Bactria and Sogdiana against Alexander. Taken by betrayal in 329, handed over to Alexander, and mutilated in the Persian royal style — nose and ears cut off (Arr. 3.30) — before the final execution at Ecbatana the following year: crucified per Curtius 7.5.40, dismembered between two trees per Plutarch *Alexander* 43.3, the two Latin and Greek traditions not reconcilable.
