Artaphernes

HistoricalAchaemenid Co-Commander at Marathon 490 BC

Nephew of Darius I and son of the satrap of Sardis of the same name who had crushed the Ionian Revolt; joint commander with Datis of the 490 expedition against Eretria and Athens. The younger Artaphernes later served under Xerxes in 480 as commander of the Lydian and Mysian contingents. His role at Marathon was subordinate to Datis, but Athenian tradition linked his name with Hippias the exiled tyrant, whom he was escorting home to be installed as Persian puppet.
