HistoricalAthenian Strategos 'the Just', Commander at Plataea

Aristides son of Lysimachus, of the Antiochid tribe — strategos at Marathon, rival of Themistocles, ostracised in 482 but recalled by the amnesty of 480 ahead of Salamis. He brought news of the Persian encirclement to Themistocles on the morning of the battle after rowing across from Aegina, in the scene where the two long-enmity rivals set aside the feud for the emergency. The following year at Plataea he commanded the Athenian contingent on the Greek left, and after the victory he drafted the assessment of tribute that became the founding charter of the Delian League in 478/477 — hence the posthumous epithet 'the Just.'
