Minor DeityQueen of the Sea; consort of Poseidon
Goddess-queen of the sea and wife of Poseidon. Hesiod numbers her among the fifty Nereids, the daughters of the sea-elder Nereus and the Oceanid Doris (Hes. *Theog.* 240–264). As Poseidon's consort she bore Triton, the fish-tailed herald of the deep who blows his conch to raise or still the waves (Hes. *Theog.* 930–933). In the imagination of the poets she is the sea itself made queenly — the roar and swell of the brine personified beside her trident-bearing husband.
Origin
A Nereid, daughter of Nereus and the Oceanid Doris (Hes. Theog. 243); consort of Poseidon, mother of Triton.
