Amaltheia

Amaltheia

Minor DeityNurse of the Infant Zeus; the Cornucopia

The she-goat — in other tellings the Cretan nymph who owned her — whose milk nourished the infant Zeus where Rhea hid him from Kronos in a cave of Crete, the Kouretes drumming to drown his cries (Apollod. *Bibl.* 1.1.6–7). From her comes the horn of plenty: in the tale of Heracles and the river-god Achelous, the broken horn is exchanged back for the horn of Amaltheia, which pours out food and drink without end (Apollod. *Bibl.* 2.7.5).

Origin

The goat (or Cretan nymph) that suckled the hidden infant Zeus on Crete; her horn became the cornucopia.
