Aeolus

Aeolus

Aiolos

Minor DeityWinds

Keeper of the winds on the floating island of Aeolia. He received Odysseus hospitably and gave him an oxhide bag containing all the contrary winds, leaving only the west wind free to blow him home. When Odysseus's men opened the bag in sight of Ithaca, suspecting hidden treasure, the storm flung the ships back to Aeolia — and Aeolus, judging the second arrival a sign of divine hatred, drove them from his island.

Origin

Son of Hippotes in Homer; distinct from the Hesiodic Aeolus son of Hellen (eponym of the Aeolians) and from the Tyrrhenian king Aeolus son of Poseidon and Arne in Diodorus — the ancients themselves often confused the three.
